The academic system in France differs widely from the one in the United States. I did what we call a preparatory classes "aux Grandes Ecoles".
The preparatory classes train intensily students during two to three years to written and oral national competitions.
Success to the competition will grant the students to access an Engineering School that will deliver a Master 's degree at the end of the program. Therefore, I do have a Master but not a degree equivalent to a Bachelors degree. American universities recognize my degree.
The education system is very particular in France. Here a website that explains more in details the preparatory class system.
